The Oketz unit specializes in training and handling dogs for military missions. 

Each dog is trained for a year in order to have a particular specialty, each dos is attached to a soldier for all his service time. The dogs are trained to operate in urban areas, as well as in rustic and bushy areas and to do a variety of missions: as weapons and ammunition dogs- to search for guns and ammunition, as search and rescue dogs- in order to find people in collapsed buildings and as attack dogs- to attack and neutralize terrorists.

During "Cast Lead" operation in the Gaza strip, on January 2009, 3 dogs killed during the military operations and saved a lot of soldiers' lives.
